As the world of photography grows increasingly technical, from high resolution megapixels to sophisticated processing software, we offer a chance to explore a different approach to food styling and photography- a natural one.
Using only avaliable light, internationally renowned photographer Tim Clinch and writer, cook and food stylist Kate Hill demonstrate to a small group of students how to get the most out of what is in front of your camera... the natural way. Natural Light & Natural Food is a collaborative project in which Tim and Kate each share their well-honed approach to food styling and photography in 5-day and weekend workshops at Kate Hill's Gascon Kitchen in Southwest France.

Kate
Hill's Gascon Kitchen is the creative site where Kate teaches workshops on the
traditional and local cuisine at Camont, her 17th Century French
farmhouse. Since their first collaboration in 2000, Tim and Kate have
partnered to produce articles and books exploring cooking at
its source in Gascony. Now you can work with them to learn how to cook
beautiful food and photograph it beautifully, and naturally, in the wonderful
setting of Kate's Gascon Kitchen at Camont.
Daily classes include: learning the natural approach to food photography without artificial lights, cooking and styling, working on a photo shoot for a major publication, building portfolio content and story development. All work is digital and students will review and post their photographs daily to a dedicated Natural Light & Natural Food gallery. Cooking is done with only local, and Natural ingredients
Students
work with their own cameras, no matter how basic. An external hard drive, computer
and basic materials for classes (food, etc) are provided. Classes are 7 hours per day begin at 9 and end at 6 pm (including a 2
hour break for French lunch).

Food
photography isn't only about recipes and ingredients. You'll also visit the
local farmers markets in picturesque French village and towns meeting (and
photographing) some of the artisanal food producers such as the wonderfully
named Narcisse Ferronato (above), Kate's favorite beekeeper.

We'll be running courses throughout the year allowing you to benefit from the wide variety of produce that Gascony produces and to enjoy some of the seasonal recipes particular to this special part of 'La France Profonde'...in spring and summer the wonderful colours of fruit and vegetables from Kates 'potager' and the splash of sunlight filtering through your glass of chilled rosé on the terrase...
and then there's winter, Tim's favourite season (from both a photographic and gastronomic point of view) allowing you to sit in front of the roaring log fire in the kitchen grilling 'Magret de Canard', shopping and shooting in frosty markets, enjoying capturing the bare, open Gascon countryside in beautiful black & white, sipping a warming Armagnac and, above all, eating Kate's world famous Cassoulet...so good it might even make you forget about taking pictures!
As for styling...let Tim explain...
'One of the many things I enjoy when I'm shooting at Camont is that the whole house is a treasure trove of 'kitchenalia'...just as I'm thinking that a slightly battered, wonky old nutmeg grater would be EXACTLY the thing that my picture needed...voila! one is found at the bottom of a drawer. The question 'Kate, do you have any nice old linen for a background' is answered almost immediately with a big pile of beautiful antique tea towels of various colours being plonked down on the table for me to choose from...if you are ever in doubt as to what you'd like to photograph on any particular day, a quick walk around the potager will soon produce a bunch of purple artichokes, a basket of gleaming aubergines or a handful of straw covered eggs from the ever growing flock of chickens and ducks. All of this is there for you to use, enjoy and photograph...so there really is no excuse not to take beautiful images'
